Drug giant Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $7.76 million in punitive damages to a plaintiff who has already received a $3.35 million compensatory award. In recent weeks, we have been reporting extensively on the case of Linda Gross, a South Dakota nurse who has had to endure 18 surgeries to undo the damage caused by her vaginal mesh implant. We are glad to see that Gross is receiving the justice she deserves after enduring such a traumatic ongoing ordeal.

Jurors in Atlantic City reached their decision on February 28th. This ruling may very well set the tone for the 4,000 other vaginal mesh lawsuits that will soon go to trial. More than 2,000 of these lawsuits will be handled in New Jersey, in the same court where Linda Gross has been awarded more than $10 million in total. The jury in her case – which consisted of six men and three women – declined to comment on its decision.

While no amount of money can reverse the pain and suffering that Gross has undoubtedly experienced over the past 7 years, this compensation should at least remove the financial strain and allow her to experience an improved quality of life. Other sufferers of vaginal mesh complications should know that it’s not too late to take legal action. Contact a qualified vaginal mesh attorney to find out if you may qualify for compensation.

J&J’s controversial vaginal mesh sling devices are intended for the treatment of Pelvic Organ Prolapse and Stress Urinary Incontinence, but have been linked to some truly devastating side effects. According to Gross’s own legal documents, “She can no longer sit comfortably for more than a few minutes without having to either stand up or lay down to try and reduce the level of pain.”
